3M Petrifilm Plates are playing-card size, sample-ready plates that enable food processors to easily and efficiently perform on-site microbial testing. They are small, flat plates that enable food processors to perform on-site microbial testing easily and efficiently. Their exclusive design features films coated with nutrients and a gelling agent.

The plates may be used to test raw materials, in-process products, finished products, and the plant environment. Petrifilm Plates may also be used to verify a plant’s Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) program.

Examples of bacterial tests available:

Aerobic Count
  • Prepared using standard method agar and includes a red dye indicator in the plate to colour all colonies for easier and more reliable counting.
  • Petrifilm Aerobic Count Plates are designed to determine total aerobicbacteria popultaions. Following a simple procedure, you can also perform anaerobic testing of lactic acid bacteria in processed meats and in high-acid foods.
  • They are ready to use at any moment for product or process testing or environmental monitoring. Their exclusive design features a film coated with nutrients and gelling agents.
  • A red indicator dye in the the plate colours all colonies red. Red colonies provide better contrast for easier colony counting. They are also easily distinguished from opaque food particlaes that can cause confusion with other plating methods.
Total Coliforms Count
  • Prepared using VRB Agar and includes a red dye indicator in the plate to colour all colonies for easier and more reliable counting.
  • The top film traps gas (seen as bubbles) produced by coliforms, providing “confirmed” counts.
E.Coli and Total Coliforms
  • Prepared using VRB Agar and includes a red dye indicator in the plate to colour all colonies for easier and more reliable counting.
  • The top film traps gas (seen as bubbles) produced by coliforms, providing “confirmed” counts.
  • In addition, a glucoronidase indicator forms a blue precipitate around any E. Coli colonies that may be present.
  • Note that E.Coli 0157:H7 is glucoronidase negative and will not produce a blue precipitate.
  • The test provides you with results in 24 hours, with no extra confirmation steps required.

NOTE: Most E.Coli (about 97%) produce beta-glucoronidase which produces a blue precipitate associated with the colony. The top film traps gas produced by the lactose fermenting coliforms and E.Coli. About 95% of E.Coli produce gas, indicated by blue to red-blue colonies associated with entrapped gas on the Petrifilm EC Plate. AOCA International and US FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manualdefine coliforms gram-negative rods which produce acid and gas from lactose during fermentation. Coliform colonies growing on the Pertifilm EC plate produce acid which cases the pH indicator to make the gel colour darker red. Gas trapped around red coliform colonies indicates confirmed coliforms.

Yeast and Mould Counts

  • Count results in 3 – 5 days. An indicator dye stains yeast and mould colonies to provide contrast and facilitate counting.
  • Yeast is typically inicated by small, blue-green colonies, with defined edges and no foci.
  • Mould is indicated by large, variably-coloured colonies, with diffuse edges and centre foci.

Staphylococcus Aureus count*

Based on the thermonuclease reaction, this test provides a rapid (26 hours) and confirmed result. The Rapid Staph Aureus (RSA) plate consists of two parts – the plate contains  modified Baird Parker nutrients with a cold-water-soluble gelling agent and a Thermostable Nuclease (Tnase) reactive disc.

Enterobacteriaceae count*

Used globally to detect post-processing contamination. The family Enterobacteriaceae includes all coliform organism plus glucose-fermenting non-coliforms such as Salmonella, Shigella and Yersina.
